When choosing spectacles and lenses, it is important to know your options to be able to decide what is the best for yourself. A spectacle prescription is simply a bunch of numbers, it tells nothing about what you may or may not need. It is a starting point for the dispenser, but the most critical process is interpreting your lifestyle requirements so the most appropriate correction can be recommended. These numbers do not necessarily reflect specific lifestyle requirements. It is the role of the dispenser to take time to interpret your needs and recommend an individualised correction for you.

Lens Types

Single Vision

Single vision lenses are the most common type of lenses in spectacles as they only include one prescription. These can be produced simply and sometimes within 1 hour, depending on prescription. As these only correct one distance at a time, some people have different pairs of spectacles for different tasks such as reading and watching the TV.

Varifocal

Varifocals combine three different prescriptions in one lens (distance, intermediate and near). They are considered a lot more convenient than single vision lenses as only one pair or spectacles are required.

There are hundreds of different varifocal types available and selecting the correct one for you is where the skill of a qualified dispenser is needed to discuss each individuals needs.

Bifocals

Bifocals are often recognised by the line across the lens caused by having a reading section in the bottom part of the lens and distance at the top. Bifocals are both convenient and easy to use.

Degressionals

Varifocals are a great solution for day-to-day life, but for specific tasks such as desk work, they may be slightly inconvenient as you may require more of an intermediate distance for computers.

Degressionals work in a similar way to varifocals but have larger reading and intermediate distance sections.

Myopia Control

Aarons are now accredited to dispense the new MiyoSmart lenses. A breakthrough in myopia control, the lenses designed by Hoya are an innovation which are proven to slow down the progression of myopia in children. Traditionally, contact lenses have been the chosen method for the slowing of myopia, MiyoSmart now provides an alternative.

Sports & Safety Lenses

Tougher lenses are vital for certain tasks, for example sports or industrial wear, they are designed to be durable and resistant to scratches to provide the most protection.
